WHY RADIO AS CURRENT
The title refers first to radio frequencies, sound waves and the technical approach to broadcasting. For our exhibition, we produced interviews and podcasts which pushed us to learn more about the technical aspect of radio making. The idea also came from exercises relating to speech, sound-effects and cassettes we found in the archive. The cassettes and recordings were becoming more and more damaged with time, which made us think about the memorability of sound, its consistency in individuals’ minds.
The title also refers to a more abstract idea, a certain contemporary disruptiveness. Radio shows allow people to go against the current, to be more critical and perceptive of changes surrounding them. Many of the challenges the world faces we will have to resolve through discussion, through talking and establishing dialogue. To us, radio programmes have the power to ignite dissidence and create communities which can have great cultural, political, and social effects.
